Nigerian Police Warn Public Against Filing False Reports Amid Viral TikTok Assault Controversy

Authorities in southwestern Nigeria have issued a public warning reminding citizens that providing false information to law enforcement is a criminal offense punishable under national law.

The Ogun State Police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, emphasized in a public advisory that deliberately misleading a police officer or any public authority can result in imprisonment, fines, or both under Nigeria’s Criminal Code Act.

Warning Follows Viral Social Media Allegations

The advisory comes after a widely discussed case involving a TikTok user identified as Abigail Nsuka, popularly known online as Mirabel.

The content creator had initially posted a video alleging that she was attacked and sexually assaulted by an unknown man who forced entry into her apartment in the Ogijo area of Ogun State. Her claims quickly spread across social media platforms, generating widespread sympathy and calls for accountability.

However, the situation took a different turn after a recorded phone conversation surfaced online. In the audio clip, which was shared by a social media personality, the TikTok user allegedly admitted that parts of her story were fabricated.

According to the recording, she reportedly created a secondary TikTok account and sent herself threatening messages to make the incident appear authentic.

Legal Implications of False Reporting

Police officials reiterated that knowingly submitting false complaints can undermine legitimate investigations and divert critical resources away from real victims of crime.

Under Nigerian law, individuals found guilty of intentionally providing misleading information to authorities may face prosecution.

While investigations into the case continue, officials have urged the public to exercise responsibility when sharing allegations online and to avoid spreading unverified claims.

Growing Concern Over Social Media-Driven Claims

The incident has sparked renewed debate about the impact of viral social media allegations, particularly in sensitive cases involving assault claims.

Legal experts note that while authorities must treat every report seriously, intentionally false claims can carry serious legal consequences and damage public trust.

Police have encouraged citizens to report crimes truthfully and to allow proper investigations to determine the facts.
