Olubadan of Ibadan Declares Open Grazing Illegal, Warns Herders to Desist

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has strongly condemned open cattle grazing in Ibadan, labeling it illegal, dangerous, and unacceptable.

The monarch issued the warning on Monday following a meeting with the Olubadan-in-Council and leaders of the Ijaye Farm Settlers Association at his palace in Oke-Aremo.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Oba Ladoja emphasized that open grazing is prohibited across Oyo State and warned that violators would face arrest and prosecution.

“Open cattle grazing is not only illegal but also expressly forbidden in Ibadanland and Oyo State at large,” the Olubadan stated. “Anyone found flouting the law will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.”

He expressed deep concern over continued attacks linked to herding activities, including killings, rape, kidnappings, and destruction of farmlands—incidents he said threaten community peace and farmers' livelihoods.

The Olubadan called on community leaders, including Mogajis and Baales, to enhance vigilance and security within their domains. He also urged residents to report sightings of suspected herdsmen or criminals to security agencies promptly.

During the meeting, Pastor David Olatunji, Chairman of the Ijaye Farm Settlers Association, detailed violent attacks on farmers by suspected herders. He lamented the lack of arrests despite numerous reports to police and appealed for urgent government intervention to enforce anti-grazing laws.

The meeting was attended by several high-ranking traditional leaders, including the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, and other members of the Olubadan-in-Council.
