Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has revealed that her children were subjected to death threats following a social media post she made during the historic #EndSARS protests in 2020.
The actress opened up about the traumatic experience during a recent appearance on Channels TV’s Rubbin Minds, explaining how a single, misunderstood comment triggered a severe online backlash that extended to her family.
The #EndSARS movement, which swept across Nigeria in October 2020, saw widespread demonstrations against police brutality and the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The protests took a tragic turn on October 20 when security forces opened fire on peaceful demonstrators at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos.
In the aftermath, Omotola posted a question online asking whether there was confirmed evidence of killings or if reports were being sensationalized. The post, which she has since deleted, was immediately met with fierce criticism from many who interpreted it as casting doubt on a national tragedy.
Clarifying her intentions years later, Omotola stated she was seeking clarity, not denying the events. She emphasized her active participation in the protests, both on the ground and through international advocacy channels.
“A lot of what I said was misunderstood. I have received death threats many times before. I am used to it,” she said. “But I have never seen anything like #EndSARS. It was intense. The attack was very personal. My kids started getting death threats.”
She further detailed her involvement, noting, “I was on the streets for #EndSARS. I was doing international advocacy. I also worked with Amnesty International.”
Omotola, who has been married to pilot Matthew Ekeinde since 1996 and is a mother of four, described the experience as uniquely distressing due to the direct threats against her children.
