Prominent Islamic Leader Calls for INEC Chairman's Removal Over Alleged Anti-Muslim Comments

Sheikh Yahaya Jingri, the National Chairman of the Council of Ulama of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa’ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), has demanded the immediate removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing alleged inflammatory statements against Muslims.

In a strongly worded statement, Sheikh Jingri accused the INEC chairman of publicly alleging genocide by Muslims against Christians in Nigeria and claimed the official had previously “abused” revered Islamic scholar Sheikh Usman Danfodio.

“Why is it that someone that had abused Sheikh Usman Danfodio and Muslims was appointed INEC chairman?” Jingri questioned. “I have personally spoken and written to President Tinubu to remove him.”

The cleric expressed disappointment that the call for removal is not being echoed by the National Assembly, asking, “Where are our legislators? They should all call for his removal from office.”

He further criticized the appointment as a high-risk decision by the administration, stating, “Muslims are rejecting the idea of having someone that invited foreign attack on Nigeria to be the chairman of an important institution in the country.”

Sheikh Jingri emphasized that such an appointment under a Muslim-Muslim leadership ticket is “an extremely a risk of the highest order.”

The statement is likely to heighten existing religious and political tensions in the country, particularly as Nigeria prepares for future electoral cycles. There has been no immediate response from INEC or the Presidency regarding the allegations.

JIBWIS is one of Nigeria’s largest Islamic organizations, giving the cleric’s remarks considerable influence within the Muslim community.
