Reports claim former Syrian leader focused on personal indulgences and mobile games amid deepening political and military crises
Former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad is facing renewed scrutiny following reports that portray a leader increasingly detached from the realities confronting his country during the final months of his rule.
According to multiple accounts cited by former insiders, Assad’s personal life and decision-making during the collapse of his regime were marked by controversial behavior, questionable alliances, and a striking lack of engagement with Syria’s escalating crises.
Claims of Personal Excess and Abuse of Power
Sources familiar with Assad’s inner circle allege that his private life revolved heavily around sexual relationships, with one close associate reportedly facilitating encounters that included the wives of senior military and government officials. These claims, while difficult to independently verify, have circulated widely among former Syrian political and security figures.
The associate at the center of these allegations, Luna al-Shibl, was a former journalist who later became one of Assad’s most trusted confidantes. She reportedly held significant influence within the presidential palace, acting as an intermediary between Assad and key power brokers.
As Assad’s grip on power weakened, sources claim al-Shibl shifted her loyalties and began sharing sensitive information with foreign actors. In July 2024, she was found dead inside her vehicle on a highway outside Damascus. Syrian state media described the incident as a traffic accident, but the circumstances surrounding her death fueled widespread speculation.
Several individuals close to the former regime questioned the official account, citing inconsistencies between the reported crash damage and the injuries observed. Competing theories have circulated, ranging from internal regime retaliation to foreign intelligence involvement. No independent investigation has conclusively established responsibility.
Detachment During National Crisis
Former aides and allied operatives also described Assad as increasingly disengaged from Syria’s political and military emergencies in 2024. Instead of coordinating responses to rebel advances and international pressure, he was reportedly preoccupied with his smartphone, spending extended periods playing mobile games such as Candy Crush.
One former allied militia operative described Assad as largely uninterested in strategic discussions during critical moments, leaving commanders without direction as the security situation deteriorated.
Silence Amid Regional Conflict
Assad’s lack of public response following the October 2024 Israel–Hamas conflict further deepened doubts about his leadership. While Israeli airstrikes intensified across Syria and Lebanon, including the killing of senior militant leaders, the Syrian president remained notably silent.
That silence prompted speculation among regional observers and former officials, some of whom questioned whether Assad was quietly cooperating with foreign powers to secure his own survival.
Collapse of the Regime and Disappearance
As rebel forces advanced toward Aleppo in late November, Assad was reportedly absent from Syria, leaving military commanders to manage the situation without presidential support. When Russian forces declined to intervene directly, Assad briefly returned to Damascus, assuring aides that the government would prevail.
Public statements claimed he was fulfilling his constitutional duties from the presidential palace. However, insiders later alleged that Assad had already fled the country aboard a Russian aircraft.
Following the fall of his government, Syria’s new authorities issued an arrest warrant for Assad. His current whereabouts remain unknown.
