Kogi Central lawmaker involved in second tense standoff in a week, this time at office of North Central Development Commission committee chairman
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan found herself at the center of another heated confrontation at the National Assembly on Monday, this time at the office of Senator Titus Zam, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the North Central Development Commission.
The incident, which reportedly involved a physical altercation between the Kogi Central lawmaker's aide and a staff member of Zam's office, marks the second time in a week that Akpoti-Uduaghan has been involved in a tense standoff during legislative proceedings.
What Happened
Sources within the assembly told PUNCH that the incident followed a budget defence session of Zam's committee scheduled for 10 a.m. By the time Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived, the meeting had already concluded.
The senator reportedly proceeded to Zam's office, accompanied by her legislative aides, seeking clarification on what had transpired in her absence. Eyewitnesses alleged that tensions escalated when she was denied entry into the office.
What began as a verbal exchange quickly intensified, with members of Akpoti-Uduaghan's entourage and staff attached to the chairman's office locked in a heated confrontation. During the commotion, one of the senator's aides was accused of physically confronting a staff member, prompting immediate intervention by National Assembly security personnel.
The situation was eventually brought under control, though details surrounding the immediate trigger of the altercation remain unclear.
A Pattern of Confrontations
Monday's incident adds to a growing list of recent disputes involving the outspoken Kogi Central lawmaker during Senate proceedings.
Last week, Akpoti-Uduaghan was involved in a tense exchange with Senator Patrick Ndubueze, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Steel Development, during an interactive session with the Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Audu.
According to sources from that session, the disagreement arose after Ndubueze attempted to conclude the minister's appearance. Akpoti-Uduaghan insisted on being allowed to continue her remarks, describing the attempt to cut her off as disrespectful before ultimately walking out of the session.
No Official Statements
As of the time of this report, neither Akpoti-Uduaghan, Zam, nor the Senate leadership had issued any official statement regarding Monday's incident.
The recurring confrontations have raised questions among observers about the internal dynamics of the upper legislative chamber and the working relationships among its members. Some have expressed concern that such public disputes could distract from the serious business of lawmaking and oversight.
Others, however, view Akpoti-Uduaghan's willingness to challenge procedural decisions as consistent with her reputation as a legislator who refuses to be silenced—a reputation she cultivated long before her election to the Senate.
What's Next
With no official explanation from either party, speculation is likely to continue about what prompted Monday's confrontation and whether any disciplinary action will follow. For now, the incident serves as another chapter in the ongoing story of a senator whose legislative career has been marked by as much controversy as accomplishment.
