U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that extremist groups targeting Christians should expect decisive and forceful retaliation, declaring that such attackers are fully aware of the consequences under his leadership.
Trump made the remarks on Thursday while speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., where he addressed global security concerns and religious persecution.
According to him, violent groups that attack Christian communities understand that his response would be swift and uncompromising.
“When Christians are attacked, terrorists know exactly what is coming. They know they will be met with violent and decisive action from President Trump. It may not sound pleasant, but that is the reality,” he said.
The comments come amid renewed international scrutiny of Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly claims by Trump and some U.S. lawmakers that Christian communities in the country are being deliberately targeted by terrorist groups.
Trump has previously designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged religious violence, a classification that sparked strong objections from the Nigerian government. Nigerian authorities dismissed the claim, arguing that it misrepresents the country’s complex security issues and threatens national cohesion.
During his address, Trump also spoke about his administration’s broader counterterrorism efforts, asserting that extremist groups had been significantly weakened under his leadership.
He claimed that the United States military had dealt a major blow to the Islamic State (ISIS) in Nigeria, accusing the group of carrying out deadly attacks against Christians.
“When I first came into office, we were defeating ISIS. But during the four years I was out, they rebuilt. Recently, however, we took them out again in Nigeria because they were killing Christians,” Trump stated.
He further warned that the United States would not tolerate continued violence against Christian populations, stressing that any renewed attacks would be met with a strong response.
Trump’s statements have continued to fuel debate both within Nigeria and internationally, as officials and analysts weigh the accuracy and implications of his claims regarding religious persecution and counterterrorism efforts in the region.
