The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ondo State has arrested two Islamic clerics for allegedly brutalizing two minors under their care in Owo.
The suspects, identified as Adebodun Muideen (30) of Al-Balaagul-Mubeen Arabic and Islamic Centre and Oladejo Musiliu (35) of Abdullah Arabic and Islamic Centre, were taken into custody following a report by the child-rights advocacy group, Kids and Teens Resource Centre.
According to NSCDC spokesperson Daniel Aidamenbor, the incident came to light when a class teacher noticed severe injuries on the children and alerted authorities. Preliminary investigations revealed that the minors, whose parents live in Osun State, had been sent to Owo for Quranic education alongside conventional schooling.
The alleged assault occurred when one of the boys returned home with a Vivo Android phone he could not account for. During questioning, the second child was implicated, leading the clerics to reportedly use a heated cutlass on the boys’ backs and buttocks, inflicting deep wounds.
Aidamenbor stated that the acts violate the Child Rights Act and the Ondo State Child Protection Law. The suspects have reportedly confessed and will be charged with assault and child abuse.
The NSCDC warned religious institutions, parents, and guardians against unlawful punishment of children, emphasizing that violence against minors is a criminal offense. The corps also commended the child-rights group for its intervention and urged the public to report suspected abuse to security agencies.
