Anthony Joshua Breaks Silence, Confirms Death of Two Key Team Members in Fatal Crash

In his first statement since a horrific crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has confirmed the devastating loss of two of his closest friends and essential team members. The boxer is in stable condition, but the tragedy has claimed the lives of individuals central to his decade-long career.

The Fallen Pillars: A Coach and a Confidant

The victims have been identified by Joshua's management and promoter, Matchroom Boxing, as:

*   Sina Ghami: A world-renowned strength and conditioning coach and co-founder of London's Evolve Gym. Ghami had worked with Joshua for over ten years, meticulously developing the champion's formidable power and stamina, forming a cornerstone of his in-ring success.
*   Latif (Kevin 'Lateef' or 'Latz') Ayodele: Joshua's dedicated personal trainer. More than a fitness expert, Ayodele was known for his humanitarian efforts in Nigeria, reflecting a passion that extended far beyond the gym. He was a constant, trusted presence in Joshua's daily life.

A Crash on a Notorious Highway

The fatal accident occurred around 11 a.m. on December 29th. Preliminary reports from Nigerian authorities cite excessive speed and a wrongful overtaking maneuver as factors, though local police have also mentioned investigating a possible tire burst. The Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway—a heavily traveled artery infamous for its high fatality rates due to congestion and poor road conditions.

Joshua, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained injuries but was conscious and able to communicate. He was evacuated to a medical facility in Lagos for observation, where no emergency interventions were required. The 36-year-old British-Nigerian boxer had just arrived in Nigeria for the holidays, fresh from his decisive sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19th.

Global Tributes and a Call for Privacy

The news has sent shockwaves through the global boxing community and beyond. Jake Paul, Joshua's recent opponent, offered heartfelt condolences, writing: "Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted." Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also personally called the boxer to offer his sympathies.

In their statement, Matchroom Boxing expressed "profound sadness" and requested privacy for the grieving families. The tragedy underscores the profound personal bonds within a champion's team and casts a somber shadow over what was meant to be a celebratory homecoming for one of sport's biggest stars.
