American rapper A$AP Rocky has opened up about how his mother, Renee Black, played a pivotal role in his relationship with singer and fashion icon Rihanna, revealing she consistently encouraged the union long before the couple officially became an item.
In a recent interview snippet from the New York Times Popcast, Rocky shared that his mother often nudged him towards Rihanna, even when he insisted they were just friends.
“My mother used to say I know you like this girl that you are with right now… but I want you with Riri,” Rocky recounted. “I used to be like ‘mum, why do you keep saying that? That girl does not even want me like that. Be cool, she is just my friend’.”
From Friendship to Family
Despite his initial skepticism, Rocky admitted that his mother’s intuition was ultimately correct. “Mothers know best and I am thankful that she was put in my life at that time because I think anytime prior to that, I do not think I was ready for something like that,” he reflected.
The couple’s longtime friendship eventually evolved into romance in late 2020. Since then, they have built a growing family, welcoming their first child in May 2022, their second son, Riot Rose, in August 2023, and their third child, Rocki Irish Mayers, in September 2025.
