Nollywood actress Teniola Aladese has voiced her belief that women should experience living alone before entering into marriage, suggesting that independence helps build self-awareness and prepares them for marital life.
In a recent episode of the That’s What She Said vodcast, Aladese contrasted this approach with the traditional practice of women moving directly from their parents' home to their husband's home.
Why Independence Matters
“A lot of women just go from their family’s houses to their husband’s house,” she noted. “But they don’t particularly know what they like, they don’t know what kind of trait their husband-to-be has. So they are shocked when they enter into the home and they see some mannerisms that they haven’t experienced before.”
Aladese argued that living alone allows women to understand themselves better, recognize their preferences, and establish personal boundaries. “You get to know the nonsense you would take and the nonsense you would not take,” she said.
Avoiding Regret and Shock in Marriage
The actress warned that entering marriage without prior independent living can lead to unexpected challenges and regret. “When you just enter into marriage without any experience of living on your own, that is when everything starts shocking you and regrets creep in,” she added.
Aladese’s comments reflect a growing conversation about personal development and preparedness before marriage, especially as more women pursue careers and self-sufficiency earlier in life.
Her perspective highlights a shift from traditional marital transitions toward a model that values individual growth and self-discovery as key foundations for a successful partnership.
