Algeria Files Official Complaints to CAF, FIFA Over Refereeing in AFCON Quarterfinal Loss to Nigeria

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has formally lodged complaints with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA over officiating decisions in its 2–0 defeat to Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals.

In a statement posted on Monday on its official social media account, the FAF expressed dissatisfaction with refereeing calls during the match, which it said “undermined the credibility of African refereeing” and harmed the image of African football internationally.

“The Algerian Football Federation cannot overlook the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and caused widespread dissatisfaction,” the statement read. “Accordingly, the Algerian Football Federation has formally contacted CAF and FIFA by submitting an official complaint, accompanied by a request to open an investigation.”

The match, played last Saturday in Marrakech, ended in controversy, with Algerian players confronting match officials after the final whistle. Circulating videos also showed scuffles between players and officials and an attempted pitch invasion by Algerian supporters.

CAF has since announced it is investigating alleged misconduct by players and officials during the game and has referred the matter to its disciplinary board.

Algeria’s federation urged fans to continue supporting the national team, which it described as being in a rebuilding phase ahead of upcoming competitions, including the 2026 World Cup.

Nigeria, meanwhile, advanced to the AFCON semifinals with goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams.
