The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has clarified that his participation in the federal government's delegation to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco was focused on holding high-level strategic talks on football development in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Abimbola Tooki, Yilwatda said the trip was not only to support the Super Eagles—who finished third in the tournament—but also to lead engagements "aimed at redefining the future of Nigerian football as a catalyst for national development."
The statement detailed that Yilwatda, alongside the Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Silas Ali Agara, convened a strategy session in Rabat to explore how football can be deliberately used to foster national unity, create youth employment, and build sustainable sports infrastructure across the country.
According to the plan, Yilwatda will provide political leadership and policy direction, while Agara will spearhead execution to generate jobs and skills development. Former Nigeria Football Federation President Amaju Pinnick is expected to contribute global insights, and policy expert Esebamen Clement will design a data-driven framework for the initiative.
The APC chairman emphasized the crucial role of state governors, particularly through the Progressive Governors Forum, in driving grassroots talent development and sports infrastructure projects in their respective states.
