Bandits Kill at Least 30, Abduct Villagers in Niger State Attack

Armed bandits have killed over 30 people and abducted several others during a raid on Kasuwan Daji village in Niger State’s Kabe district.

According to police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun, the attackers struck on Saturday, setting a market ablaze and looting shops. Images from the scene show some victims were bound before being killed.

Repeated Violence in a Vulnerable Region

The attack occurred less than 20 kilometers from Papiri village, where more than 250 students and staff were kidnapped from a Catholic school in November. The local Catholic diocese reported a death toll higher than the police figure, stating the bandits “operated for hours with no security presence.”

Niger State has faced repeated large-scale kidnappings and violent raids in recent months, stretching Nigeria’s already overburdened security forces. The country continues to grapple with multiple security crises, including jihadist insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest, and separatist tensions in the southeast.

This latest attack underscores the severe and persistent security challenges confronting communities in north-central Nigeria.
