Body of Missing Army Major Recovered After Terrorist Ambush in Borno

The body of Major Bashar Mohammed, a Nigerian Army officer who went missing after a terrorist ambush in Damasak, Borno State, has been recovered, a close friend has confirmed.

Aliyu Jamilu announced the tragic news in a heartfelt Facebook post on Wednesday, mourning the loss of his friend who “paid the supreme price in the defense of the motherland.”

Major Mohammed was among the troops attacked by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters during an ambush on a military patrol in Damasak last week. Initial reports indicated that at least nine soldiers were killed, with several others, including their commanding officer, declared missing.

In his post, Jamilu reflected on their last conversation, recalling that the Major had contacted him despite being in a remote area with poor network coverage.
“To think that I spoke to him few days ago where he told me *yana cikin bush* (he was in the bush) and there was no network, yet still managed to reach out to check up on me, says a lot about the kind of person he was,” he wrote.

Jamilu prayed for divine mercy and comfort for the family and loved ones left behind.

The attack underscores the continued threat posed by insurgents in northeastern Nigeria, despite ongoing military operations in the region.
