KAMPALA, UGANDA– The Ugandan Electoral Commission has officially declared President Yoweri Museveni the winner of Thursday's presidential election, extending his nearly four-decade rule with a seventh term.
The 81-year-old leader secured a decisive victory with 71.65% of the total vote, according to official results. His main challenger, opposition leader Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform (NUP), reportedly garnered 24.72%.
The announcement follows days of intense controversy, including a nationwide internet shutdown and allegations of military raids and arrests targeting the opposition.
A Controversial Victory
The election was marred by significant claims of irregularities from the outset. Bobi Wine and his NUP party had earlier rejected preliminary results, alleging widespread ballot stuffing, voter intimidation, and the deliberate suppression of their agents from polling stations.
Hours before the final results, Wine released a video statement claiming he had narrowly escaped arrest after a military and police raid on his home, an incident the Ugandan military had previously dismissed as false. His family remains under house arrest.
Decades of Power Cemented
Museveni, who came to power in 1986, has overseen constitutional changes on two separate occasions to remove presidential age and term limits, a move critics say has cemented a de facto "presidency for life."
International observers have expressed deep concern over the electoral environment. The government's decision to cut off internet access across the country for "security reasons" severely hampered independent monitoring and the flow of information.
What Comes Next?
While the official declaration solidifies Museveni's grip on power, it is unlikely to quell the political turmoil. The opposition is expected to formally challenge the results, and the international community faces pressure to respond to the reported human rights violations and democratic backsliding.
With heightened military presence on the streets of Kampala and key opposition figures reportedly detained, the nation braces for potential unrest as Museveni prepares to begin another five-year term.
