CAF President Reveals How He Intervened When Burna Boy Was Held at Moroccan Airport

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has revealed that he personally intervened to resolve a customs issue involving Nigerian superstar Burna Boy at a Moroccan airport.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) third-place match, Motsepe explained that he received an urgent call requesting his assistance after airport authorities briefly detained the Grammy-winning singer.

The hold-up was reportedly due to the large amount of jewellery Burna Boy had with him while traveling to perform at the tournament’s closing concert.

"It was a standard procedure. Like in every country, he just had to declare the items. And the matter was resolved," Motsepe stated, clarifying that it was not an accusation of wrongdoing but a routine customs check.

Burna Boy later performed without further incident, and Nigeria went on to secure third place in the tournament by defeating Egypt.
