Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Nigerian Fashion Designer, Toyin Lawani, Accuses Euracare Hospital of Severe Medical Negligence

Fashion entrepreneur Toyin Lawani has publicly accused Lagos-based Euracare Multispecialist Hospital of medical malpractice, alleging that a spinal surgery she underwent there left her with life-altering complications, including damaged vocal cords and lung infections.

In a detailed Instagram post on Sunday, Lawani revealed she spent nearly ₦100 million on the procedure and subsequent care at the hospital. She stated that shortly after the surgery, she suffered severe complications, including internal bleeding in her lungs, which required an emergency second operation.

“Till today I still can’t speak well or walk well… They had to puncture my lungs & they destroyed my vocal cords,” she wrote. She described a harrowing moment when she was administered injections and her heart temporarily stopped, leaving her unable to breathe.

Lawani said she ultimately had to be rushed to the United Kingdom for further treatment, where doctors discovered an infection in her lungs and performed another surgery to remove large lumps.

“After 3 surgeries in that same hospital back to back, yet I still had to have another one when I got to the UK. It’s just so shameful,” she expressed, adding that she remains in and out of hospitals due to ongoing health issues linked to the experience.

Her allegations come amid heightened scrutiny of Euracare following similar claims from award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who recently accused the hospital of negligence in the death of her 21-month-old son. The Lagos State Government has since ordered a full investigation into the incidents.

Lawani ended her post with a stark warning: “If you have health issues in Nigeria, even if you have your money, just think carefully before going there.”

Her testimony adds to growing public concern over medical standards and patient safety in some private Nigerian healthcare facilities.
