A fatal accident involving two heavy-duty trucks on the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed the life of one driver and caused significant traffic disruption on Friday morning.
The collision occurred inward Secretariat and involved a sand-laden trailer and a granite-laden trailer. According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash resulted from a reckless contest for right of way.
The impact trapped the driver of the sand-laden trailer, who sustained fatal injuries. LASTMA rescue operatives extracted him and handed him over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service. He was later pronounced dead at the General Hospital in Ikeja. The driver of the granite-laden trailer escaped unharmed.
Secondary Accident Worsens Gridlock
Adding to the chaos, another trailer carrying flour overturned about 50 meters away, blocking nearly 80% of the carriageway and worsening the gridlock. Police from the Alausa division were deployed for crowd control and security during recovery operations.
Motorists were diverted through alternative routes including Ojodu-Olole, Agidingbi, and Secretariat to bypass the scene.
Officials Blame Driver Indiscipline
Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, described the accidents as regrettable and preventable, citing impatience, indiscipline, and failure to yield as contributing factors. He urged strict adherence to traffic rules and mutual courtesy among motorists.
Giwa also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and commended the prompt response of LASTMA, LASAMBUS, and security agencies.
