Federal Government Approves ₦1 Trillion Metropolitan Rail Project for Kano State

The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano State, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming urban transport, reducing traffic congestion, and boosting economic activity in the state capital.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, announced the approval while addressing a state delegation that participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Borno State. The announcement was confirmed in a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Thursday.

Governor Yusuf stated that the rail project will provide a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit system connecting key districts within Kano metropolis. He emphasized that the initiative will improve mobility for residents and stimulate trade and investment in the region.

“The Kano Metropolitan Rail Service will transform public transportation in the state by providing a reliable, safe and affordable means of movement for residents across the metropolis,” Yusuf said.

The Governor also linked the project to his administration’s recent political alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the federal level, explaining that the move was intended to attract critical development projects to Kano.

He described the rail service as a landmark intervention that will enhance the quality of life for residents and reinforce Kano’s position as a major transportation and economic hub in Northern Nigeria.

The state government has pledged to collaborate closely with federal agencies to ensure transparent and effective implementation of the project.
