The Kosoko royal family of Lagos has formally dismissed a petition challenging the selection of veteran actor Jide Kosoko as the next Oloja of Lagos, reaffirming his nomination as valid and binding.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the family described the appointment as a “lawful and traditional correction of a monumental error,” referencing the prolonged delay in installing a previously selected candidate, Abiola Olojo Kosoko, who was named Oloja-elect in 2020 but never installed.
The petition, reportedly filed by Surajudeen Abiodun Olojo-Kosoko and Theophilus Olojo-Kosoko, emerged shortly after the family’s public announcement of Jide Kosoko’s nomination. The family has rejected the appeal, stating there is no internal crisis but rather a collective decision made during a meeting on January 24, 2026.
“It is both shocking and duplicitous that the authors of the petition are now feigning ignorance of a decision they actively participated in,” the family stated.
According to the royal house, the dissenting princes were present and involved in the deliberations that led to Jide Kosoko’s selection. The family also clarified that the selection process is entirely separate from the reign of Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the current Oba of Lagos.
They characterized the petition as an attempt to distort facts and disrupt a settled family resolution, confirming that a general meeting to formally present Kosoko as the Oloja-elect remains scheduled for January 27.
