FIFA Condemns Senegal's "Unacceptable" Walk-Off During AFCON Final, Praises Hosts Morocco

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a strong public condemnation of the Senegalese national team’s conduct during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, while simultaneously commending tournament hosts Morocco.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Infantino criticized the “unacceptable scenes” that marred the final in Rabat, where Senegal clinched a 1–0 extra-time victory. The controversy centered on Senegal’s players and technical staff staging a 14-minute walk-off in protest after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco in stoppage time.

“We strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members,” Infantino stated. “It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport.”

The FIFA President stressed the importance of respecting match officials and indicated that he expects the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to take appropriate disciplinary action.

Praise for Morocco Sparks Debate

Infantino also extended significant praise to host nation Morocco, thanking King Mohammed VI and calling the country “exceptional hosts.”

This dual message has stirred debate across African football circles. Critics point out that Morocco’s campaign was also marked by controversy, including the viral “towel saga” where defender Achraf Hakimi was seen taking Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy’s towel before a penalty, as well as pre-match complaints from Senegal’s football federation about inadequate security and accommodation.

The FIFA President’s remarks add pressure on CAF to issue sanctions against Senegal’s coach and players for the walk-off, while also fueling perceptions of preferential treatment toward the host nation.
