The Dangote Refinery has signed a major $350 million contract with the Indian engineering firm Engineers India Limited (EIL) to oversee a massive expansion project that will significantly boost its production capacity and establish it as the world's largest single-location refinery.
The agreement designates EIL as the Project Management Consultant and Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management Consultant. This partnership builds on EIL's previous role in the initial development of the 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) refinery, which was commissioned in 2024.
The expansion, first announced by Aliko Dangote in October, aims to more than double the refinery's capacity from 650,000 bpd to 1.4 million bpd. The plans include adding a second processing train to produce Euro VI grade fuels and substantially increasing polypropylene output.
Specifically, polypropylene production is set to rise from 830 kilo tonnes per annum to 2.4 million metric tonnes per annum. This will be achieved by revamping the existing unit and installing an additional plant, supported by a new 750 kTPA Oleflex Unit to supply propylene feedstock.
The project is positioned as a critical step in Nigeria's ambition to become a regional hub for refined products and petrochemicals. Once complete, the expanded refinery is expected to strengthen Africa's fuel production, reduce reliance on imports, and enhance regional energy security.
EIL stated that the contract "is a strong affirmation of the trust reposed in EIL’s capabilities to deliver projects of exceptional scale and complexity," and described the expansion as a "project of global significance."
