Kenyan Businesswoman Robbed of Ksh9.3 Million by Fake Police Officers in Mumbai

A Kenyan entrepreneur is reeling from a significant financial loss after being robbed of ₹66.45 lakh (approximately Ksh9.3 million) in Mumbai, India, by individuals posing as police officers.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 27, outside the Alana Centre building on Mahatma Gandhi Road. The businesswoman, identified as Sumaiya Mohammad Abadi from Nairobi, was returning to her hotel with a friend when their taxi was intercepted by two men on a motorcycle wearing helmets and masks.

The suspects presented fake police identification and demanded to search the vehicle. They specifically questioned Abadi about her bags, which contained a large sum of cash, before seizing them and instructing her to report the incident at the nearest police station. The duo then fled on their motorcycle.

Upon realizing she had been deceived, Abadi, with the assistance of the taxi driver, immediately reported the robbery at the MRA Marg police station. Officers there informed her that a similar incident had been reported recently.

Abadi, who deals in children's garments, had arrived in Mumbai on Monday, January 26, for a business purchasing trip. Before the robbery, she had met a Kenyan friend in the Kalbadevi area who gave her ₹58 lakh (Ksh8.1 million) in cash to pay a wholesale garment supplier.

Indian police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, reviewing CCTV footage and conducting ground patrols. One person has been detained based on preliminary evidence, and authorities have stated that the individuals will face charges of cheating and impersonating a public servant once apprehended.
