Lagos Schools Close Temporarily Following Bomb Threats, Police Confirm Safety

Two prominent private schools in Lagos—Avi-Cenna International School and Grange School—were forced to suspend physical academic activities on Thursday following separate bomb threats.

The schools announced temporary closures as a precautionary measure, despite assurances from law enforcement after sweeping both campuses.

School Administrations Respond

Avi-Cenna International School informed parents via a letter signed by Paul Olubajo, stating that management received a text message warning of a potential fire explosion. The school immediately contacted the police, who deployed a special unit to assess the premises.

“After a thorough assessment of the entire premises, they confirmed that the premises are safe. However, school will remain closed for today,” the letter read.

Similarly, Grange School announced a one-day closure in a statement issued by Head of School Richard McMahon. Although no immediate danger was found, the school decided to act responsibly, offering online classes for students during the closure.

Police Investigation and Assurance

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, along with the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), conducted comprehensive sweeps of both schools. Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi stated that no explosive devices or dangerous materials were found.

The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered an investigation to identify and apprehend the sender(s) of the threat messages.

Resumption Plans

Both schools emphasized that student and staff safety remains their highest priority. While Grange School has arranged virtual learning for the day, Avi-Cenna indicated it would provide further updates regarding resumption.

Normal academic activities are expected to resume shortly, pending final security clearance.
