Media Personality Daddy Freeze Criticizes Wizkid for Fela Kuti Comparisons

Nigerian media personality Daddy Freeze has weighed in on the ongoing debate about Afrobeat star Wizkid comparing himself to the late legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Freeze argued that such comparisons are unfounded, citing the fundamental difference between Wizkid's musical stardom and Fela's legacy as an activist.

The controversy stems from an exchange between Wizkid and Fela's son, Seun Kuti, who criticized fans for likening the modern artist to his father. Wizkid responded defiantly, claiming superiority over the late icon.

In his critique, Daddy Freeze emphasized that Fela’s impact extended far beyond music into the realm of political resistance and social activism. He highlighted Fela’s willingness to face repeated arrests and persecution for challenging oppressive regimes—a level of sacrifice and risk that defines his legacy.

“Until Wizkid is ready to stand up and carry stones to Government House, he shouldn’t compare himself to Fela,” Freeze stated. “Fela put his skin in the game. Fela wasn’t a troublemaker; he was a freedom fighter. Agitation and music go together; you can’t separate the two. Fela went to jail fighting for our rights.”

Freeze's comments underscore a broader cultural conversation about the nature of artistic legacy, distinguishing between commercial success and socio-political influence in the Nigerian music scene.
