An ambush by gunmen in Zamfara State has resulted in the deaths of five soldiers and one police officer. The attack occurred on Monday along the Bingi-Kekun Waje-Gusau Road.
The troops were from Operation Fansan Yamma and were returning from a three-day security operation across the Birnin Magaji and Anka areas. According to a statement by the operation's media information officer, David Adewusi, the mission had earlier led to the arrest of three suspects and the killing of four terrorists.
While en route to respond to a distress call, the convoy was ambushed near Gidan Wagni. Despite what was described as a gallant response that prevented harm to nearby communities, the attack claimed the lives of the six personnel.
Reinforcements, personally led by a brigade commander, were swiftly deployed and mounted a counter-ambush that forced the attackers to withdraw. Military intelligence suggests that several terrorists, including two high-profile bandit leaders, sustained serious injuries during the clash.
