The Defence Headquarters has dismissed a widely circulated video in which a man identified as Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta—also known as “Gentle the Yahoo,” a commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN)—claims to have returned after previously being captured by troops.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated that the video may have been created using artificial intelligence (AI) to spread misinformation and cause public alarm.
“In this era of AI, it is possible to create anything just to destabilize and cause panic within society,” Onoja said.
In October 2025, the military announced that troops under Operation UDO KA had captured the commander, who was linked to attacks in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State. In the newly surfaced video, a limping individual claiming to be Gentle the Yahoo alleges he was poisoned while in custody and vows to restore peace in the region, while also issuing warnings to the governors of Imo and Anambra states.
Major General Onoja reaffirmed that the military would investigate the video and work with relevant security agencies to verify its authenticity. He emphasized the armed forces' commitment to pursuing individuals or groups that threaten national security.
