Nigerian Influencer Peller Loses $3,000 Bet After Super Eagles' AFCON Exit

Popular Nigerian TikToker and content creator Peller is counting a costly loss after his $3,000 bet on the Super Eagles backfired, following Nigeria's dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final on Wednesday.

The match, held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, ended 0-0 after extra time, with the Atlas Lions securing a 4-2 victory on penalties to advance to the final.

A Costly Misunderstanding

In an emotional video shared online, a distraught Peller revealed that he was unaware his bet would be void after regular time. He had wagered $3,000 (approximately ₦3.9 million) on Nigeria to win within 90 minutes—a condition that became irrelevant when the match extended to extra time and penalties.

“I wasn’t aware my bet would be void after 90 minutes,” he lamented, expressing his disappointment after leaving the viewing center where he watched the match. He had publicly urged the team to win, even promising forward Ademola Lookman ₦500,000 per goal in a previous post.

The loss ended what had been a flawless tournament for Nigeria. The Super Eagles entered the semi-final with a perfect record, having won all five matches and scored 14 goals—the highest in the competition. They topped Group C with three wins, defeated Mozambique in the round of 16, and overpowered Algeria 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

Despite the strong campaign, Nigeria couldn't break down a disciplined Moroccan defense, and their dream of a fourth AFCON title was dashed from the penalty spot.

Peller’s misfortune adds a personal footnote to the national disappointment, highlighting the risks of sports betting and the emotional rollercoaster that accompanies high-stakes football. Meanwhile, Morocco moves on to face Senegal in the final, while Nigeria will contest the third-place playoff.
