Billionaire Abdul Samad Rabiu to Pay Super Eagles $500,000 Despite Semi-Final Loss

Nigerian industrialist and philanthropist Abdul Samad Rabiu, founder of the BUA Group, has announced he will honor his $500,000 pledge to the Super Eagles despite the team's painful semi-final exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Rabiu had initially promised the financial reward if Nigeria defeated Morocco in Wednesday's semi-final. Following the Eagles' penalty shootout loss to the host nation, the billionaire took to Instagram to commend the team's effort and confirm he would fulfill the pledge as a token of appreciation.

“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch. Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud,” Rabiu wrote.

He praised the team's spirit, passion, and unity, stating that those qualities matter more than the result. “As a token of appreciation for their remarkable journey and effort, I will fulfill my pledge of $500,000 USD, recognizing the players’ hard work, dedication, and the joy they have brought to Nigerians nationwide,” he added.

Looking Ahead with Pride

Rabiu encouraged the players to hold their heads high, emphasizing that the experience would fuel future successes. “Keep your heads high, Super Eagles – the experience, lessons, and spirit will fuel even greater success next time. Nigeria will always be proud of you, and we believe in your future victories,” he concluded.

The gesture has been widely praised by fans and observers as a classy and morale-boosting act following a heartbreaking defeat. It underscores the significant support the private sector has shown for Nigerian football, particularly during major tournaments.

The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff, while Morocco advances to the final where they will face Senegal, who defeated Egypt 1-0 in the other semi-final.
