NLC Calls for Escalation of FCTA Strike, Alleging "Gross Violation" of Workers' Rights

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared full solidarity with the ongoing indefinite strike by workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), urging all its affiliate unions to join the industrial action.

In a statement signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, the NLC characterized the strike as a "necessary and heroic response" to what it describes as a systematic violation of workers' rights by the FCTA management and its political leadership.

The union leveled severe allegations against the FCTA administration, including:

*   The illegal withholding of five months' wage award and promotion arrears.
*   Failure to remit pension contributions and National Housing Fund deductions since May 2025.
*   The intimidation of staff through tactics like banning phone usage and incarcerating workers.

Ajaero condemned these actions as "capitalist exploitation and bureaucratic oppression," and "an act of economic sabotage" that condemns workers to a destitute old age.

Strike to Widen, Court Mobilization Planned

The NLC has directed all its affiliate unions within the FCT to align fully with the strike, signalling a significant escalation.

Furthermore, the union has called on workers to mobilize at the National Industrial Court on January 26, where the FCTA and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, have filed a suit challenging the strike.

The NLC president warned that the patience of the working class is exhausted, and failure to resolve the disputes would lead to a further escalation of actions.

“To the workers of the FCTA, NLC says: Your struggle is our struggle. Your victory will be a victory for every exploited worker in Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
