Widespread Network Disruption as MTN Nigeria Reports Over 9,000 Fibre Cuts in 2025

MTN Nigeria has disclosed a severe operational challenge, reporting a staggering 9,218 fibre cuts across its network in 2025. The telecoms giant also noted that 211 sites were impacted by theft and vandalism as of November 30, leading to significant service disruptions for customers nationwide.

Despite these infrastructure setbacks, which severely affect network reliability, the company stated it successfully resolved 1,624,263 customer complaints across all service channels during the period. MTN also reported a resilient subscriber growth, reaching 85 million customers by September 2025.

In a statement addressing the issue, Karl Toriola, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, acknowledged the company's ongoing struggles with service consistency. "There is progress to be proud of. And we clearly still have work to do," Toriola said via LinkedIn. "We are not where we want to be yet, but our commitment to putting the customer at the centre of everything we do remains constant."

He reaffirmed this commitment as MTN prepares to mark its 25th anniversary in Nigeria in 2026, promising sustained efforts to listen to customers and improve service delivery.

This situation highlights a critical and persistent issue within Nigeria's telecoms sector. In response to the recurring problem of damaged infrastructure, the Federal Government formed a Joint Standing Committee on the Protection of Fibre Optic Cables in February 2025. This committee, involving the Federal Ministries of Works and Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, aims to safeguard the critical infrastructure that forms the backbone of the nation's digital connectivity.

The scale of the damage reported by MTN underscores the urgent need for protective measures to ensure stable telecommunications services for millions of Nigerians.
