Oloka, Oyo State – In response to a deadly attack that killed five forest guards at the Old Oyo National Park, Governor Seyi Makinde has announced plans to request the establishment of a permanent army base in the affected Oloka community.
The governor visited the area on Friday to meet with grieving families and local residents, condemning the assault as a "criminal attack" carried out by cross-border bandits.
Support for Bereaved Families
Makinde pledged immediate financial and educational support for the victims' families. Each family will receive ₦5 million, and the children of the slain officers will be granted scholarships up to university level.
Enhanced Security and Infrastructure
To prevent future attacks and restore calm to the panicked community—where many residents have reportedly fled—the governor outlined a multi-step security and development plan:
* Military Presence: He will formally request the Chief of Army Staff to set up a Forward Operating Base in Oloka, with the state government providing necessary support.
* Improved Infrastructure: The community will see road upgrades under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), along with new boreholes and solar-powered lighting.
* Better Communication: The state will assist in installing mobile network masts to address poor telecommunications, aiding emergency response and daily life.
Justice and Commitment
Makinde confirmed that three suspects directly linked to the attack are already in custody and will face prosecution.
He assured residents of his administration's dedication to restoring safety and normalcy, stating, "We remain committed to restoring safety and normalcy to Oloka and surrounding communities."
