Presidency Affirms Fubara as APC Leader in Rivers, Says Wike “Has Been Compensated”

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, has stated that the President supports the position that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State.

Bwala’s statement comes amid renewed political tension and impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, largely influenced by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

APC Chairman’s Position

Bwala aligned with APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, who earlier stated that Governor Fubara, as the sitting governor, is the party’s leader in the state. This is in line with the party’s practice of according governors leadership status at the state level.

Clarifying Wike’s Role

Speaking on a national television program, Bwala clarified that Wike, currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and therefore cannot lead the APC in Rivers.

“Wike has been adequately compensated,” Bwala said, referencing the minister’s appointment. “The president believes in compensating people, but not at the expense of the interest of Nigeria.”

President’s Stance on Governance

Bwala emphasized President Tinubu’s commitment to constitutional order and the rule of law, noting that the president believes governors should be allowed to govern without undue interference, regardless of their political party.

He added that the ongoing impeachment process must follow legal procedures and that court orders currently restraining the Rivers State House of Assembly must be respected.

The comments signal a deliberate effort to clarify the political hierarchy in Rivers State and reinforce Governor Fubara’s authority amid the continuing fallout with his predecessor.
