Shina Peter/Jim Ovia Comparison: Shina Peters Addresses Pastor's Comment, Chooses Grace Over Legal Action

Veteran Nigerian musician and pastor, Sir Shina Peters, has publicly responded to comments made by Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, founder of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), which sparked widespread discussion online.

The Controversy

During a sermon on wealth and timing at the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), Pastor Ashimolowo used a comparative anecdote to illustrate the principle of delayed gratification. He cited that in 1990, two individuals each had ₦20 million. One, reportedly Shina Peters, used the funds to build a large personal residence. The other, Zenith Bank founder Jim Ovia, used the same amount to establish a financial institution.

AshimoLowo concluded that while the value and relevance of a house built in 1990 may diminish, the bank founded with an equal sum has grown into a multi-trillion naira enterprise. He urged congregants to prioritize long-term investment over immediate display of wealth.

The Backlash

The sermon clip circulated widely, drawing criticism from many netizens and celebrities who felt it unfairly criticized and mocked Shina Peters' legitimate career success. Among them was singer Daddy Showkey, who defended the music icon's legacy.

Shina Peters' Response

In a composed reply shared on his Instagram story, Shina Peters clarified the narrative. He thanked Daddy Showkey for bringing the matter to his attention but stated he would not pursue legal action or retaliate with harsh words, citing his own dedication to the Christian faith.

“As a man of God myself... I will not be taking legal actions nor will I speak ill against you, despite your false & derogatory statements,” he wrote. Peters emphasized that God has blessed him immensely over the decades, a fact known to those close to him. He extended blessings to Pastor Ashimolowo as well, adding that what matters is how individuals use their blessings to set positive examples.

The incident has ignited a debate on social media regarding the measurement of success, the appropriateness of using public figures in sermonic illustrations, and the different forms wealth can take beyond pure financial valuation.

Sir Shina Peters, a pioneer of the Afro-Juju music genre, remains a beloved figure in Nigerian entertainment and has also served as a pastor for many years.
