Tragedy in Ogun: Man Kills Wife in Front of Children, Then Takes His Own Life

A young mother of three was fatally stabbed in her home at River Valley Estate, Ogun State, in a horrific incident of domestic violence that unfolded in front of her children. Her husband later died in what authorities suspect was a suicide, leaving the couple’s three children orphaned.

The victim, Ganiyat Ayanwale, was attacked on the evening of Thursday, January 8, 2026, by her husband, Ayoola Ayanwale. According to neighbors, the assault began after Ganiyat refused to ingest a poisonous substance he had allegedly obtained. He then locked their younger children in a room, took a knife, and stabbed her repeatedly as their older child screamed.

Bleeding heavily, Ganiyat managed to stagger outside before neighbors rushed her to Gifted Hands Hospital. She reportedly told those helping her, “I just entered the house. He attacked me.” She was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to severe internal injuries and blood loss.

Neighbors described Ayoola as a known perpetrator of domestic violence. After the attack, he allegedly returned to clean evidence before fleeing the scene.

Less than 12 hours later, he was found gasping for breath in an open field in the Sotubo area and was later pronounced dead. Police recovered a bottle containing a suspected toxic liquid, two mobile phones, and identification cards at the scene.

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the incident, noting that an official statement will be issued.

The tragedy underscores the deadly escalation of domestic abuse and has reignited calls for awareness and intervention. Advocates stress that marriage should never be a life-or-death arrangement and urge those in abusive situations to seek help before it is too late.

Three children now face a future without either parent, bearing the traumatic memory of a violence that should have never touched their home.
