Turkish Officials Surprised by Nigerian Media Focus on Tinubu's Stumble, Says Abike Dabiri

Turkish officials expressed surprise that President Bola Tinubu’s brief stumble during a state welcome ceremony in Ankara this week became a major topic in Nigerian media, according to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

Tinubu stumbled on Tuesday while walking alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan during the official ceremony. He was promptly assisted by aides and continued with the event.

In a post on social media, Dabiri-Erewa, who was part of the Nigerian delegation, stated that Turkish officials were “shocked to learn that it was an issue in Nigerian media and blogs.” She quoted one official as describing the media attention as “silly and mischievous,” while emphasizing that Turkish coverage had instead focused on the overall success of the state visit.

Despite the remarks, Tinubu’s stumble was also reported by several Turkish news outlets, including the state-run Anadolu Agency and independent newspapers such as Cumhuriyet, Nefes, and YeniçaÄŸ.

The incident had sparked widespread discussion across Nigerian newspapers, blogs, and social media platforms throughout Wednesday.
