Ukraine Receives 1,000 Bodies of Soldiers in Latest Exchange with Russia

Ukraine announced on Thursday that it has received from Russia the remains of 1,000 individuals whom Moscow claims are Ukrainian soldiers killed in the ongoing conflict.

In a statement posted on social media, Kyiv’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed the repatriation, which marks one of the few remaining forms of cooperation between the two nations since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Vladimir Medinsky, a senior aide to the Kremlin, also confirmed the exchange on Telegram, stating that Russia had received the remains of 38 deceased Russian soldiers in return.

Medinsky noted that the transfer was carried out under agreements reached last year between Ukrainian and Russian delegations during talks in Istanbul.

Tens of thousands of troops have been killed on both sides since the war began, though neither country regularly releases official casualty figures.
