University of Ibadan Tops Nigerian Rankings for Law and Medicine in Global Subject List

The University of Ibadan (UI) has been ranked as Nigeria’s leading institution for both Law and Medicine in the recently released Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject for 2026.

According to data published on the THE website, UI placed within the 301–400 global band for Law, sharing this tier with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). This ranking assesses universities across key areas including teaching, research, and international outlook, with specific emphasis on fields such as constitutional, international, corporate, and criminal law.

In the category of Medicine and Health, which evaluates programs in medicine, dentistry, nursing, and related disciplines, UI also led all Nigerian universities by securing a place in the 301–400 band. The University of Lagos followed closely in the 401–500 band.

Other Nigerian institutions featured across the broader rankings:

* Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, University of Benin, University of Jos, and UNN were placed in the 601–800 band for Medicine.
* Babcock University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Ilorin appeared in the 801–1000 band.
* Lagos State University and the University of Port Harcourt were listed in the 1001+ category.

Globally, Stanford University claimed the top position in the Law ranking, while the University of Oxford led the table for Medicine and Health subjects.

The annual THE subject rankings are widely regarded as a key benchmark for academic excellence, evaluating institutions based on rigorous performance indicators tailored to each field of study.
