El-Rufai Says Arrest of Four Associates Imminent, Claims He's Next

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has declared that his arrest by federal authorities is only a matter of time, alleging that four of his former aides have already been detained.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai claimed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is deploying aggressive tactics—including arrests—to pressure politicians into either joining the party or remaining loyal as the 2027 election cycle intensifies.

"Four people who worked with me in Kaduna have been arrested. So, for me, it's only a matter of time—they will come for me too," he stated.

Defection and Escalating Criticism

El-Rufai governed Kaduna State for eight years under the APC banner before defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Since his departure, he has significantly escalated his criticism of President Bola Tinubu and the APC leadership.

His warning arrives amid a flurry of political realignments and defections across the country, with various camps aggressively positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

"I Was Never Tinubu's Friend"

In Tuesday's interview, the former governor explicitly denied ever sharing a cordial relationship with President Tinubu—contradicting assumptions that their political estrangement was recent.

"There is an assumption that I was ever Tinubu's friend. I was not," El-Rufai said. "We never got along. We never had a personal relationship like the one I had with General Buhari."

The remarks draw a sharp contrast between his working relationship with former President Muhammadu Buhari and his current stance toward the Tinubu administration.

As of press time, neither the presidency nor the APC has issued an official response to El-Rufai's allegations.
