Fela Kuti Honored with Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Hailed as Influence on Generations of Musicians

Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the revolutionary Afrobeat creator, has been posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, making him the first African artist to receive the Recording Academy’s highest honor.

The award was presented during the 2026 Grammy ceremony and accepted on behalf of the family by Fela’s children—Femi, Yeni, and Kunle Kuti.

In an interview following the event, Femi Kuti, himself a six-time Grammy nominee, expressed surprise and pride at the recognition. “I was shocked. They called to tell us he was going to receive it, and I was like, wow,” he told ARISE News. “It was an awesome, good feeling. I’ve always known my father was a genius.”

Femi emphasized that the award validates his father’s unwavering artistic independence. “A man that stood by his own rules is rewarded,” he said. He described Fela’s music as being on par with the greatest composers of his time, even though Fela deliberately remained outside mainstream culture.

The honor also marks a historic moment for African music. “For him to be the first musician from Africa to be awarded, it’s a great deal for us,” Femi noted. He attributed the decision to Fela’s vast influence across genres and generations, stating, “Hardly any great musician, past and present, has not heard or was influenced by his music.”

When asked about potential critics, Femi responded succinctly: “If anybody is complaining, go and create your own award.”
