Power Restored at Nigerian High Commission in South Africa After Debt Settlement

Power has been restored to the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, after the mission settled outstanding municipal service debts. The electricity supply was initially disconnected earlier in the week by the City of Tshwane due to unpaid utility bills.

City Executive Mayor Nasiphi Moya confirmed the disconnection in a post on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a photo of the High Commission building and stating the mission owed money for services. “We’ve disconnected electricity at the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They owe the city for utility services,” she wrote.

Following payment by the Nigerian mission, Mayor Moya announced the restoration of power, thanking the High Commission for honoring its obligations. “We thank the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for honouring its debt to the city. The city will reconnect electricity,” she stated in a follow-up message.

The incident has drawn attention to the operational and funding challenges sometimes faced by Nigerian diplomatic missions abroad. The High Commission has not yet issued an official statement regarding the payment or disconnection.
