A five-year-old boy and his father who were taken into federal immigration custody earlier this month have been released and have returned to their home in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, were detained on January 20 after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested the father outside their family home. They were later transferred to an ICE detention facility in Dilley, Texas.
Their release came after a judge ordered them to be freed from custody. U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro, a Democrat from Texas, personally accompanied the pair back to Minnesota.
“Yesterday, five-year-old Liam and his dad Adrian were released from Dilley detention center. I picked them up last night and escorted them back to Minnesota this morning,” Castro announced on social media. “Liam is now home. With his hat and his backpack.”
Castro added, “Thank you to everyone who demanded freedom for Liam. We won’t stop until all children and families are home.”
The case had drawn national attention and sparked protests after images circulated of the young boy—wearing a backpack and a fluffy hat—being led by immigration agents during his father’s arrest.
