Ghanaian President John Mahama has recalled the country’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Ahmed, following allegations of electoral malpractice linked to parliamentary primaries in Ghana.
Ahmed, who was an aspirant in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries for the Ayawaso East Constituency, is accused of involvement in voter inducement during the recent vote.
A statement from the Ghanaian presidency on Saturday cited the need to uphold ethical standards for public officers and avoid any perception of impropriety. The recall takes immediate effect.
The decision follows an announcement by the NDC’s General Secretary that the party has launched an investigation into the incident. President Mahama directed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to carry out the necessary diplomatic and administrative steps for the envoy’s return.
