Israeli special forces have apprehended a senior member of the militant group al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya in an overnight operation near the Lebanon border. The captured individual has been identified by his group as Atwi Atwi.
According to a statement from al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya, Atwi was detained in the town of Habbariyeh, located approximately five kilometers north of the Israeli border. The group declared it holds Israel "fully responsible for any harm that may befall him," emphasizing concern for his welfare.
The raid, conducted by a unit operating under the IDF's 210th "Bashan" Regional Division, began late Sunday and concluded in the early hours of Monday. Israeli military officials confirmed the operation but have not provided further details on the circumstances of the capture or whether others were detained.
Israeli authorities routinely state that such targeted missions are necessary to prevent attacks against civilians and to maintain security along the northern border. The IDF considers Atwi a significant operative, warranting the strategic attention given to this mission.
