Keep Snakes Away: Expert Reveals What Attracts Them to Your Home

Following the tragic death of singer Ifunanya “Nanyah” Nwangene from a snake bite, wildlife veterinarian and conservationist Dr. Mark Ofua is sharing crucial advice for preventing snakes from entering residential areas. In an interview, Dr. Ofua explained that snakes are primarily driven by survival instincts—seeking food, shelter, or warmth—not aggression toward humans.

Why Snakes Enter Human Spaces

Dr. Ofua, founder of Saint Mark’s Animal Hospital, emphasizes that snakes are “primal creatures” with no concept of play or fun. Human activity, particularly deforestation and construction, often disrupts their natural habitats, forcing them into closer contact with neighborhoods.

Two main factors attract snakes to compounds:

1.  Shelter: Piles of rubble, leftover building materials, unused pipes, wood, or blocks create ideal hiding spots.
2.  Food Sources: Properties with rats, lizards, frogs, or even chickens inadvertently draw snakes in search of prey.

Key Prevention Tips

To make your home less inviting to snakes, Dr. Ofua recommends:

*   Clearing yards of construction debris, woodpiles, and unnecessary clutter.
*   Securing food sources by controlling rodent populations and ensuring chicken coops are snake-proof.
*   Remembering that snakes are usually just passing through; they do not seek out human interaction.

If Bitten

In a related advisory, experts recommend moving away from the snake calmly to avoid a second bite, if possible noting its description for medical identification, keeping the bite below heart level, and seeking immediate emergency care.
