Kidnappers Abduct Schoolchildren and Family Members Along Edo Highway

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted several schoolchildren and family members on Monday along the Benin–Akure Road in Edo State, raising fresh concerns over insecurity on major highways in the region.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on February 2, 2026, along the Eko-Abeku-Iyowa axis in the Evboneka community. According to the head of the affected family, Festus Bamidele, nine members of his household were initially taken, including a nursing mother, six children, an infant, and other relatives.

Bamidele stated that the nursing mother and her baby were later released by the kidnappers following heavy rainfall on the same day. Three other young children in pre-kindergarten were rescued through the intervention of local vigilantes and security personnel.

However, four family members—ranging in age from 11 to 26 years—remain in captivity. Bamidele confirmed that the kidnappers have contacted the family demanding a ransom of ₦260 million for their release.

The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident, noting that police from the Ekiadolor Division engaged the kidnappers in a gunfight. She said five victims were rescued unharmed, while four were taken deeper into the bush during the exchange.

Ikoedem added that a joint operation involving police, hunters, and vigilantes is underway to track the kidnappers and secure the release of those still held.
