NDLEA Arrests Brazil Returnee with Cocaine Hidden in Shoes and Thigh, Seizes Large Cannabis Hauls Nationwide

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a businessman returning from Brazil at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine into Nigeria.

The suspect, Uche Onyekwere, was arrested on January 29 after a body scan revealed 1.60 kilograms of cocaine concealed around his right thigh and hidden in the soles of his shoes. According to the NDLEA, Onyekwere admitted to purchasing the drugs in Brazil with plans to sell them in Nigeria to fund his business and finance the naming ceremony of his newborn child.

In a series of nationwide operations, the agency also intercepted several large drug shipments:

*   Tincan Seaport, Lagos: 1,183 kilograms of Canadian Loud cannabis, imported from Montreal and concealed in a container carrying two vehicles.
*   Niger State: 2,735 kilograms of skunk (cannabis) and one kilogram of Colorado intercepted in a truck; the driver confessed to being paid N1.7 million for transportation.
*   Edo State: 792 kilograms of skunk seized from a suspect during transport along the Auchi-Abuja expressway.
*   Edo State (Farm Raid): Over 4,063 kilograms of cultivated skunk destroyed on a 1.6-hectare farm, with four suspects arrested.
*   Anambra State: 345.2 kilograms of skunk discovered hidden in a cement truck at Upper Iweka, Onitsha.

NDLEA Chairman, Buba Marwa, commended the officers involved and emphasized the agency's continued balanced focus on drug supply reduction and demand prevention through its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative.
