The Nigeria Police Force, through its INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Abuja, has repatriated $23,000 recovered from an international romance scam to a victim in the Cayman Islands.
The operation followed a formal request from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service to investigate a Nigerian suspect, Achufusi Obioma Ikenna, who allegedly defrauded a Cayman Islands resident through an online romance scheme.
Acting on the request, INTERPOL NCB Abuja conducted an intelligence-led investigation that led to the suspect's arrest and the recovery of the stolen funds. After completing the necessary legal processes, the money was formally handed over to the Cayman Islands police through the British High Commission in Abuja.
Force spokesman Acting ACP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that the suspect will be arraigned upon the conclusion of the investigation. The successful repatriation highlights ongoing international cooperation in combating transnational cybercrime and the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to intelligence-driven operations.
