In the clip, recorded in New York City, Darlington suggested that Grammy success is less about artistic merit and more about industry connections, specifically referencing American music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. His remarks were widely interpreted as an indirect critique of Burna Boy’s 2021 Grammy win, which came after collaboration with Diddy.
The video emerged shortly after South African singer Tyla won the Best African Music Performance category, defeating Nigerian nominees Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Omah Lay, and Ayra Starr.
